Sam Payne’s debut poetry collection, this boy is a rainbow, tells a touching story of gay love and heartache, healing and empowerment. It is the story of a boy who lost love and thought he would never be whole again. Divided into three chapters, it follows his journey as he endured the storm, found the sun, and became the rainbow.
Featuring over two-hundred original poems and illustrations, the collection encourages readers not only to survive the storm, but to thrive in it. And when the storm is over, be ready to let love in again. For love is everywhere, if only you open your heart.
for throwing me
into the bared teeth
of a treacherous storm
if you hadn’t
i wouldn’t be
i am today
This book, oh my goodness, it’s just the third poetry book I’ve read and I’m not a poetry expert so I’m just expressing my thoughts and how much I liked it.
this boy is a rainbow gave me all the feels, Sam Payne is truly an amazing artist and I’m a little torn because he didn’t deserve all the pain but at the same time it molded him and this amazing book so there’s that. It’s the kind of poetry that will make you want to sit in silence holding your heart and soothing your soul for a while after a piece and lighten your insides like a colorful rainbow, it makes you think a lot about life.
It’s lgbtq+, heartbreak and finding yourself poetry with beautiful simple illustrations which I really enjoyed, it does illustrate some self harm pieces so trigger warning, I’ve heard some people complain about poetry books with illustrations like this and honestly I don’t get it, like how can you not love it? , it’s poetry that makes your heart ache and then soothes is, it revives your soul and has line art, it’s perfection.
Words can’t express how much I truly loved this book, if there’s one thing I don’t like is that I don’t have the printed copy yet but the book itself is otherworldly and can we talk about that beautiful cover? It’s simple yet colorful, straight to the point, beautiful white background, a sun, a rainbow, it’s startling.
I 100% recommend it to pretty much anyone, it’s out on January 1st 2018 so you can’t really get it as a Christmas gift BUT you can give it as a late Christmas/New Years gift. So now that I said that, I only have one thing left to say and that is thank you, thank you Sam for this book, everything about it I love and you truly blessed the world with it.
