Review: Mayhem by Jamie Shaw

PSA: This is the first book in the Mayhem Series by Jamie Shaw. Can be read as a stand-alone.

In a nutshell (aka Goodreads review):

When college freshman Rowan Michaels meets gorgeous, up-and-coming rock star Adam Everest, she knows a player like him is the last thing she needs after her ex-boyfriend shattered her heart. But she can’t stop thinking about the kiss they shared on his tour bus.

On the first day of school, Rowan is stunned when Adam saunters into her French class. He’s soon failing miserably, and, on a whim, she offers to tutor him. But Adam doesn’t recognize her as a makeup-free, glasses-clad college student—a far cry from the beautiful, mysterious “Peach” he met at his concert.

During a wild weekend on tour with the band, Rowan can’t help falling for the sweet guy buried beneath Adam’s rocker persona. Yet she knows she could never compete with the girls constantly throwing themselves at his feet. She’d just end up hurt … again.

Peach is all Adam thinks about, though, and when Rowan realizes this, she has a decision to make: stay just friends to protect her fragile heart … or reveal the truth about the night they met and admit she’s fallen completely, hopelessly in love with him.

My review (aka Diana’s review):

I love rock star romance stories. But unfortunately this is not one of my favorites.

Rowan, the main character, makes me want to roll my eyes so much. And I hate rolling my eyes. She’s your typical virginal, naive, innocent heroine. She’s a really bland character to me. Definitely not what I like a heroine to be. She’s just so MEH!

On the other hand, I like Adam. Kinda. Again, not my favorite type of character but he won me over. Adam’s the lead singer of a band. He’s rock star, has no self-respect, he’s a manwhore but, you know, on the inside he’s a really nice guy. He did achieve to make me swoon a little in some scenes. Damn him.

Now let’s talk about the story.

One night Dee, Rowan’s best friend, dresses Rowan with the shortest skirt and highest heels ever (that is SO cliché) and convinces her of going out to see a show/concert.

But surprise, surprise! Rowan’s boyfriend is there too. And he’s not alone.

Rowan’s heart shatters all over the floor and, lo and behold, Adam’s there to save the day. They drink and talk and drink and make out because she just discovered her boyfriend cheating, so of course what she needs to mend her broken heart is to make out with this super handsome rock star and all that crap (y’all I hate when people do that).

Adam wants “Peach” (he calls her that because she never told him her name) to stay after the show and go at it. But she escapes and now he’s obsessed with her.

However, Rowan was not expecting for Adam to be in her french class. And he doesn’t recognize her! The horror!

Eventually Rowan offers help to Adam because he’s going to fail french class and they become friends and he treats her different than other girls (classic) and she hangs out with his band mates and they all love her because she’s so nice! And so not like the other loose women that stick to them like gum!

But Adam still doesn’t know she’s actually “Peach” (boy, how come!? I’m rolling my eyes). Is she ever going to tell him? What is going to happen!? Well, I guess y’all will have to read the book to find out. Wink, wink.

Mayhem is an insta-love book, if you don’t like insta-love then stay away from this book.

It is SO CLICHÉ and I love me some good cliche stories but this one just didn’t do it for me. It doesn’t have a fresh touch to it, you know what I mean?

I’m crossing my fingers I didn’t sound like a complete jerk about this book because I did like some of it. If you really love rock star romances then I say you should give it a try because this book was not meant for me but maybe it is meant for you. There’s a reason it has such amazing reviews on Goodreads!
